just came back from an amazing trip to himachal, punjab and delhi. i have been planning a visit to mcleodganj for so many years but somehow it materalised only this year. mcleodganj, for those who don’t know, is the residence of the dalai lama and one of the most important places to learn about tibetan buddhism. the place was so buzzing with backpackers from all over the world and tibetan people that i kinda felt like a minority in my own country for the first time. here is a photo tour of the wonderful places i visited and cherished during my visit.

finally i managed to watch the raid redemption that released yesterday in chennai. despite the sweltering heat, i booked a matinee show as i could not book the night show due to sheer distance between my home and satyam theatre. i was told this is a path-breaking film in the genre of action movies but i could not even imagine it would be the greatest fucking epic in the genre of action movies. i grew up watching jackie chan movies and bruce lee’s “enter the dragon” and the occasional youtube videos of vijaykanth and the legendary balakrishna some of which were funny and some were truly great stunts. this movie totally redefines the action genre and there is no one way one could watch the whole movie without cringing or turning your face away from the screen atleast a couple of times. though nothing is as horrible compared to the saw movie. this is 100 minutes of exhilarating ride and the most fun you can have with your pants on.
plot: the swat team in jakarta goes to raid a 30 storey building in the city that the mafia has made its fortress. there is no way for the swat team to know how secure the building is so they decide to take the risk and go on with the encounter. soon the cops die pitifully when they find themselves outnumbered and their enemies much powerful than the cops themselves.how they manage to thwart the enemies and how they survive the ordeal forms the crux of the story.
trivia: the action scenes involved uses a unique form of indonesian martial arts called pencak silat which i guess is the reason why the fight scenes were so original and refreshing. the best part is the camera doesn’t shy away from showing some really bloody scenes which surprisingly is very much watchable.
memorable quotes: in an interesting scene one of the main villains who is a bodyguard in that building has a cop staring at his gun. he doesn’t shoot however and in fact throws his gun away and says “shooting to kill someone is like a fast food. fighting to kill a person is like enjoying a five-course meal. and i like to fight!”
Did i like it? Hell, yeah!
Did i fall asleep? not even a little bit.
recently i watched kahaani after reading all the rave reviews. to be frank, it was a decent film which could have been even great if it wasn’t for the botched up climax. still i came out of the theatre thinking that was a decent thriller and worth a try. days after watching the movie, there was this song from the movie that was ringing in my head all the time. i couldn’t understand the lyrics or what it meant. i could only guess with scene playing that it might mean to fight against injustice or never give up. i later googled the song and i had goosebumps when i found out that it was a song written by rabindranath tagore during freedom struggle and the song is actually a bengali song. i found the song and the translation of the song into english which was done by tagore himself. i was fascinated and moved by those lines. it goes like this:
Jodi tor đak shune keu na ashe tôbe êkla chôlo re,
Êkla chôlo, êkla chôlo, êkla chôlo, êkla chôlo re.
Jodi keu kôtha na kôe, ore ore o ôbhaga,
Jodi shôbai thake mukh firaee shôbai kôre bhôe—
Tôbe pôran khule
O tui mukh fuţe tor moner kôtha êkla bôlo re.
Jodi shôbai fire jae, ore ore o ôbhaga,
Jodi gôhon pôthe jabar kale keu fire na chae—
Tôbe pôther kãţa
O tui rôktomakha chôrontôle êkla dôlo re.
Jodi alo na dhôre, ore ore o ôbhaga,
Jodi jhôŗ-badole ãdhar rate duar dêe ghôre—
Apon buker pãjor jalie nie êkla jôlo re.
- If they answer not to thy call walk alone,
- If they are afraid and cower mutely facing the wall,
- O thou unlucky one,
- open thy mind and speak out alone.
- If they turn away, and desert you when crossing the wilderness,
- O thou unlucky one,
- trample the thorns under thy tread,
- and along the blood-lined track travel alone.
- If they do not hold up the light when the night is troubled with storm,
- O thou unlucky one,
- with the thunder flame of pain ignite thy own heart
- and let it burn alone.
thank you kahaani for introducing me to this jewel.

one of my favorite tamil shows of all time is the lollu sabha(old version) which used to play during my college days with santhanam in lead. the show was such a big hit and the lead star santhanam was so popular which gave him such a mass audience. one of the main reasons for the show’s popularity was their utter disrespect for the movie stars whom they imitate and totally damage their punch dialogue and mannerisms. even super star rajni was not excluded. his baba spoof and dialogues like “கதம் கதம் முடிஞ்சது முடிஞ்சி போச்சு முடியாதது முக்கிட்டு போச்சு!” and “கத்திய நீங்க எடுத்த சமாதானம் நன் எடுத்த அன்னதானம் அஞ்சு சாம்பார் பொட்டலம் வாங்கித்தரனும் baba counting starts ah one…” etc had me laughing till i had stomach cramps. the show producers even had to apologize for their pokkiri inspired show “bakery” which was total damage to ilaya thalapathi.you can watch the show below.
sometimes the best ones of lollu sabha turned out to be the one in which they left mocking the movies towards their own subject. one such episode is the extreme english! hilarious!
i was a bit disappointed when it came to an end around 2010. however yesterday i was glad to see lollu sabha was back. in the form of நீங்களும் வெல்லலாம் ஒரு கோடி (kaun banega crorepati tamil version). the show hosted by surya was full of hilarious questions that the below video can be considered as serious show!
one of the sample questions is show below.
surya neither can talk humourously nor can he perform impromptu. the contestants chosen to play the game are chosen in such a way they can answer questions only upto 1 lac. the only reason to watch this show is for the funny questions they ask during the initial phases. otherwise even santhanam can host this show better than surya!
i was highly excited when i found out the artist was releasing just two days before the oscars. in india, they have this peculiar way of making a high pitch for oscar favorites by waiting till the oscar weekend to release the movie to cash in on its success. as a result, what should have been a normal release 3 months ago is now a delayed release. i’ve waited a long time to watch the artist since i heard of it through film critics and other film awards. i was well aware of the fact that it is a silent cinema and there are no dialogues and it is a black and white movie in 35mm. this actually worked in my favor since there is no difficulty in trying to understand every word the actors say!
the artist is a fantastic tribute to the silent cinema of the 1920’s era. never thought that i would enjoy a silent movie so much.all the tim i was watching i was thinking of how great actors like charlie chaplin were to have made a mark in cinema without any dialogues simply through facial expressions. george valentin, played excellently by jean dujardin is a star of the silent cinema era and who thinks silent movies are the future. however with the advent of talkies and his total dislike for movies with dialogues(he laughs shamelessly when he sees his first talkie movie) begins his career slide and thereby heralding arrival of new stars. how he copes with his decline and how he becomes a star again forms the rest of the movie. as i said already, the movie can be watched repeatedly for wonderful performance by jean dujardin, peppy miller(forgot her real name) who always stands by the man who accidentally led her to stardom and of course the dog which gave an amazing performance that it should easily have been nominated for best supporting cast! do go and watch the artist. it is when we watch movies like these do we understand why cinema is such a powerful medium.
did i like it? YES.
did i fall asleep? a little bit in the middle. but the a/c was in full blast so can’t blame the movie!
finally i can proudly put a tick against the second item on my bucket list for 2012 which is to improve my fitness and lose weight. this week i enrolled myself in a gym to get fit and slim as well as to lose my pant size a couple of inches. around this time last year, i saw this movie called payanam in which nagarjuna playing a commando looked so cool and suave in his perfectly chiselled body that still got imprinted my mind so much that i immediately decided to do something to get into that shape. tried walking in a neighborhood park for an hour everyday but could not wake up in time. and every time i woke a bit late, top gear will be running around 7am on bbc entertainment which is too good to miss. after which sun shines in chennai without respite. this went on and off for three months without any improvement. the biggest setback came to me in the form of my trip to sravanabelagola and chikmaglur. took 30 minutes to climb a peak that was supposed to be a cakewalk with my tshirt totally drenched and gasping for breath!
it was truly evident that my fitness level sucks! thatswhy i intend to work hard and this gym workout will get me looking “fit and fabulous”!
P.S: the JOY RUN is organised by ILMME(www.ilmme.org) a 10km run for charity event on 22-Feb at IIT MADRAS and simultaneously in 6 different cities. do try to make it if u can! for me it is a 10km walk with shortcuts and glucose!
